Installation and setup was easy. Adding a hard drive was a breeze. The picture is nice, the user interface is intuitive, although the remote control is of poor quality. The biggest problem is the firmware; software quality control seems to have been a low priority on this product.

The system came with firmware version 1.0.8 installed. Upgrading to 1.1.2 solved some of the bugs, and added some nice features, but some serious flaws remain. The most serious problem is with some Divx formats; when played from the HDD, the "Loading..." icons remains on screen, controls are disabled, and the video plays for 30 minutes or so before freezing. The only option at that point is to power cycle the unit. When the same file is played across the wireless network, the problem disappears, but video can become quite choppy.

The latest firmware version allows almost all MP3 files I tried to play properly, but some JPG pictures still cause the unit to crash. Again, the only way out of those is a power cycle.

Fast-forward and rewind functions take some practice to operate, as they tend to overshoot, probably due to buffering. Audio volume levels are inconsistent--watch out the first time you try an iRadio station!

For what this unit costs, I would buy it if only as an audio server. If you're looking for a reliable video player, I would wait until the bugs are fixed, or look for a better product.

July 2007 update: Version 1.1.3 fixes more problems and adds an FTP server function. Loading speed is also improved, but fast-forwarding an HD movie or trying to return to a bookmark will still often cause the system to freeze up.

October 2007 update: Version 1.1.7 fixes yet more issues with HD files and FTP functions. System crashes are now rare, although the unit still can take a minute to synchronize after fast forwarding through a high-def video. It's good to see the manufacturer is serious about fixing the bugs and improving the unit.

February 2009 update: After two years and several more firmware updates (I'm at version 1.1.11 now), I've finally given up. It is clear the device will never support the popular H.264 format. The latest revisions added yet more features which, to me, are useless, but there has been no improvement in handling the fast forward responsiveness issue, or adding support for more formats. With devices supporting H.264 now selling for under $100, I think the MG-350 has reached the end of its useful life. True, those $100 devices aren't wireless (yet), but transferring a 2GB file across the wireless connection has never been a very practical approach, and I always ended up connecting the unit directly to copy files. The company now offers a new model, but I'd be reluctant to try their products again.
