(More customer reviews)Sadly, this computer just has too many problems to recommend. The cheap DVD drive has a flimsy sideways tray that physically hangs going in and out. You have to mash the button repeatedly before it will even try to eject; it will not burn anything without third-party software (which means it absolutely refuses to burn the recovery discs). (To its credit, it does a passable job of burning with other software once you can get the media in and out of the darn thing)
The hard drive grinds away furiously doing God-knows what and freezes web pages since day one, only showing background system activity in task manager. McAfee and spyware protection has been on here since day one and no culprits can be found for the lousy performance. Our cable modem was fine on all the other computers we've had here.
My poor friend who bought the same model has dial-up and the modem died within six weeks, only to have Gateway refuse to provide customer support until she'd made several calls. They kept claiming that this computer does not have a modem - for crying out loud, it was working until it quit, and the factory-printed box it came in touted the modem as a feature - she had to read the box to them repeatedly before they would even double check. The fix they gave her only lasted two more weeks. They offered to let he ship the computer back - potentially at her cost - and could not commit to fixing it, either for free or for a price. Somewarranty!
She gave up and bought an external modem.
I've had several Gateways but never again. The one star is very generous.
